settle patent suit http://dallas.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/2003/09/08/daily7.html T-Netix
Inc. and Global Tel*Link Corp. have reached a $12 million settlement over a
two-year-old patent infringement dispute, T-Netix said Monday. The company said
Global Tel*Link would pay it $12 million in cash to settle a lawsuit filed in
September 2001 by T-Netix against Global Tel*Link and MCI Worldcom. In the suit,
filed in the Eastern District of Texas, T-Netix had alleged that the companies
had infringed on six patents protecting call processing equipment and services
for the corrections industry. Index MicroStrategy Defeats
$100 Mil Patent-Infringement Suit http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=14200341 MicroStrategy
Inc. has defeated a $100 million patent-infringement lawsuit brought by rival
Business Objects SA, one of several such lawsuits that vendors in the
increasingly competitive business-intelligence software industry have filed
against each other. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of
California on Aug. 29 issued a summary judgment--a ruling issued prior to a jury
trial--that Business Objects' claims were unsupported and that MicroStrategy had
not infringed on a Business Objects patent. The court dismissed the suit "with
prejudice," meaning that Business Objects can't refile the suit

Simulation and synthesis of sports
matches
Abstract: A
reality-based sports gaming network, enables a realistic simulation of an event,
such as a sporting match. The simulation may be based on a live version of the
event. An event detection section identifies semantically significant events in
the sporting match and organizes the events in a hierarchical model. The
hierarchical model may be used to implement probabilistic reasoning to infer
likely results of actions different from the actions taken during the actual
match. In particular, an event synthesis section predicts outcomes or creates
artificial events based on additional user input. A user may thus take control
of a match, starting from the middle of the match, and play a game derived from
the match. Index

Method and apparatus for reducing
risk that a thrown toy will injure an animal
Background: the
invention relates to an animal toy which when thrown can bounce erratically,
which minimizes the probability of harm to an animal trying to catch a toy which
has been thrown, which is symmetrical but is shaped to include points at varying
distances away from the center of the toy to enable the toy to bounce
erratically, which is permanently sealed so that the toy repeatedly
compressively elastically deforms and bends in the same predictable manner,
which includes a soft fabric outer surface that compresses to absorb blows and
soften the impact when the toy hits an animal or other surface, and which can
withstand being bitten or chewed by a dog and continue to function.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades An
electric shaver includes blades which while rotating around their own centers
also orbit around another axis, thus providing that the blades sweep a large
area.
Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
